When it comes to trying to find the perfect gift for that gamer in your family there are a plethora of choices out there. This is my short guide to some of the best choices.
1. Everquest II - Collector's Edition is a great choice for the RPG gamer. It has a brand new engine and promises the unique dungeon crawling and hunting experience as the old game, with a new twist. NPCs now have voices! That's right, they talk to you. It's a nice addition to a game that has not only a long history, but is one of the top rated MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) on the market. The collectors edition includes in game exclusive art, a baby dragon and two talking statues as well as a map, posters and several other collectible items. It also ships in a nice shiny case for you to keep other things in should you choose to do so. One note, this game requires a fairly beefy system to run on and also requires an internet connection. Run by SOE, there is a $14.95 per month fee to play.
2.Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas, the long awaited 5th game in the GTA series. I remember playing the first GTA and being so blown away by the gameplay and the graphics. It reminded me a lot of the old game "Stocker" but with pedestrians and guns. Make no mistake, this game puts all it's predecessors to shame. Taking place in California this time (obviously by the title), the scenery is breathtaking and the carnage simply awesome. Yes this game is violent and NO it is not for kids. There are tons of new missions and all kinds of vehicles to drive including bicycles! If you loved Vice City you are going to love San Andreas even more.
3. Competing with Everquest II's market share is World of Warcraft. New to the MMORPG world but not a new game, it's as addicting and fun as EQ ever was. Similar to EQ, this game takes place in the world of Azeroth where players can adventure and quest with other players from around the world. From early accounts, this game is incredible. From the detail of the characters to the gameplay itself it offers challenging gameplay for novices and veterans alike. As with EQII, there is a nominal fee to play online in addition to the cost of the game itself.
4. Sid Meier's Pirates! is an update to one of my all time favorite games. You play a fledgling pirate trying to make it in 17th century caribbean. You can fight enemies on land and sea, using whatever you can find as a weapon. For anyone that remembers the old Pirates! game, this is sure to please.
